Surgical outcomes following hemivertebrectomy in congenital scoliosis: A systematic review and observational meta-analysis

European Spine Journal Mar 27, 2021

Barik S, Mishra D, Gupta T, et al. - In congenital scoliosis due to hemivertebrae, widely used definitive correction surgery is hemivertebrectomy, which may be carried out either as combined anterior and posterior approach or a single-stage posterior approach only. Researchers herein conducted a meta-analysis comparing two techniques with regards to blood loss, operative time, deformity correction and complications. Inclusion of a total of 37 studies was performed for review. The hemivertebrae were commonly located at the thoracolumbar spine (51.3%), thoracic (26.2%), lumbar/lumbosacral (21.6%) followed by cervical (0.7%). Findings revealed significantly lower operative time and blood loss in posterior only approach with no difference in correction rate as compared with combined anterior posterior approach. Age at surgery was noted to be significantly linked with the necessity for revision surgeries.
