Surgical outcomes and prognostic factors for patients with gastric cancer spinal metastasis
Cancer Management and Research Jul 30, 2019
Zhong N, et al. - In this analysis of 17 patients who underwent spinal surgeries as a treatment option for gastric cancer spinal metastasis (GCSM), researchers focused on the outcome as well as prognostic factors. Findings revealed that the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 11.3 months and the median overall survival (OS) was 11.9 months. As a result of the surgical management of patients with GCSM, effective pain relief, function restoration, and stability reconstruction were achieved, this demonstrates the efficiency of surgery as a treatment option for patients with GCSM. Favorable factors for better OS included low levels of carcinoembryonic antigen, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and high Tokuhashi score (>6). Longer PFS was reported in relation to low levels of LDH, ALP, and application of bone cement.
