Surgical lung biopsy in children after hematopoietic cell transplantation
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Apr 02, 2018
Ortega-Laureano L, et al. - The value of surgical lung biopsy (SLB) in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) pediatric patients was determined. Outcomes indicated SLB to be safe and informative in these pediatrics. The most common histological finding was cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, followed by infection. Perioperative complications included bronchopleural fistula, splenic laceration from a trocar injury, and hemothorax. In most patients, SLB led to changes in therapy. However, long-term survival was <50% after this procedure, emphasizing the fact that pulmonary complications are some of the leading causes of mortality in these patients.
