Surgical interventions for management of benign parotid tumors: A systematic review and network meta‐analysis
Head & Neck Jul 29, 2021
Mashrah MA, Al-Sharani HM, Al-Aroomi MA, et al. - Researchers conducted this current network meta-analysis to investigate if the extent of surgical resection of benign parotid tumors elevates the risk of postoperative complications. They also sought to determine the best surgical strategy for management of benign parotid tumors that can offer an acceptable balance between tumor recurrence rate and other postoperative complications. They analyzed 44 studies comprising 7841 participants. Enucleation, extracapsular dissection (ECD), partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP), superficial parotidectomy, and total parotidectomy were compared. The tumor recurrence rates in these respective surgical interventions were 14.3%, 3.6%, 3.7%, 2.8%, and 1.4%, respectively. Findings revealed that increase in the extent of parotid resection was accompanied by elevation in the risk of temporary facial nerve weakness and Frey's syndrome. The results showed that both ECD and PSP offered an acceptable balance between the incidence of tumor recurrence and facial nerve dysfunction and thus, both can be considered the treatment of choice for benign parotid tumors.
