Surgical and oncological long term outcomes of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) resection- Retrospective cohort study
International Journal of Surgery Apr 08, 2018
Badic B, et al. - Postoperative outcomes and long-term oncologic results of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) resection were compared. Laparoscopic vs open surgery for GISTs was analyzed. A subgroup analysis of lesions larger than 5cm was performed. For GISTs, laparoscopic resection has been identified as a technically and oncologically safe and feasible approach compared with open resection. Laparoscopic resection of lesions superior of 5cm showed efficacy and recurrence rates similar to open surgical controls. Surgeons with a large experience with minimally invasive surgery are recommended to perform large tumor resection in order to avoid operative complications and unfavorable long-term outcome.
