Surgical and endoscopic interventions that reduce lung volume for emphysema: A systemic review and meta-analysis
The Lancet Respiratory Medicine Apr 02, 2019
van Geffen WH, et al. - Via a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers assessed the impacts of lung volume reduction in patients with emphysema. They analyzed evidence from the trials of lung volume reduction in emphysema cases. Only randomised controlled studies assessing the intervention with either sham or standard of care and published in English were included in the analysis. These trials were identified from MEDLINE. The main outcomes of interest were residual volume, FEV1, St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), and 6-min walk distance (6MWT). For some analyses, high risk of bias and heterogeneity was reported. Data showed that clinically meaningful benefits were seen with lung volume reduction in patients with severe emphysema on maximal medical treatment. Considering these benefits alongside potential adverse events was recommended.
