Surgery for adhesive small-bowel obstruction is associated with improved long-term survival mediated through recurrence prevention: A population-based, propensity-matched analysis
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Aug 30, 2019
Behman R, Nathens AB, Haas B, et al. - Researchers conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of 27,904 patients admitted for their first episode of adhesive small-bowel obstruction (aSBO), in order to examine the potential for enhanced survival with operative management through the prevention of admissions for recurrence of aSBO and the associated risks. Patients admitted for their first episode of aSBO showed a significant long-term survival benefit in correlation to undergoing operative management. The prevention of recurrences of aSBO seemed to mediate this survival benefit.
