Surgeon decision making for individuals with obesity when indicating total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 11, 2021
Sherman WF, Patel AH, Kale NN, et al. - This research was sought to examine the effect of individual surgeon demographics, financial concerns, and other factors in ascertaining patient candidacy for total joint arthroplasty (TJA) based on body mass index (BMI). Via the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Research Committee, a 21-question survey was approved for distribution to its membership. This study’s findings demonstrate that there are myriad factors that influence surgeon BMI thresholds for offering elective TJA including poor outcomes, hospital thresholds, financial considerations, and the well-being of the patient. Future evaluation should be conducted in order to minimize the risks correlated with TJA while providing the best possible care to patients with morbid obesity.
