Surgeon awareness of the relative costs of common surgical instruments
JAMA Sep 26, 2019
Zhao B, Childers CP, Hays RD, et al. - Since the operating room represents a cost-dense environment and a large proportion of its expenses can be attributed to disposable surgical instruments, and given a critical role of surgeons in managing supply costs as they usually have a choice of instruments to use, researchers intended to clarify if surgeons can precisely distinguish the more costly item of 2 surgical instruments, a task that more accurately reflects real-world decisions. As far as surgeons' cost knowledge is concerned, they appeared unskilled at estimating the cost of surgical supplies, as revealed in a previous investigation. Furthermore, a passive mechanism for educating surgeons regarding surgical supplies has been introduced, known as cost report cards (CRCs), to attenuate spending. However, there is a lack of information on the link between CRCs and cost knowledge.
