Surface contamination in the operating room: Use of adenosine triphosphate monitoring

Journal of Anesthesia Dec 14, 2018

Ramirez A, et al. - Contamination of high-contact surfaces in the operating room (OR) was prospectively investigated using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) monitoring. Researchers tested if the contamination increases from morning (AM) to afternoon (PM), despite cleaning between cases. Further, they assessed the degree of OR contamination compared to non-OR control sites. They selected ORs with high case volumes for the study. They swabbed 10 sites in each OR using the AccuPoint HC ATP Sanitation Monitoring device, which provided a numerical measure of contamination (relative light units, RLUs). Analyzing 80 morning and 70 afternoon samples from 8 ORs indicated the highest level of morning contamination of laryngoscope handles, apart from the OR floor, hence improved cleaning practices of laryngoscope handles may reduce cross-contamination risk.
