Supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma: A population-based study of 22,675 cases
The Laryngoscope Jul 24, 2019
Patel TD, et al. - Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, researchers analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of patients presenting with supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma (SCCa) and assessed treatment trends and outcomes. From 1973 to 2013, the SEER database was queried for patients with supraglottic SCCa. There have been identified 22,675 cases of primary supraglottic SCCa. According to findings, supraglottic SCCa is generally treated with radiotherapy most commonly, followed by surgery and radiotherapy. Compared to patients treated with other modalities, surgically managed patients had better disease-specific survival (DSS) of 5 years. Patients with the American Joint Committee on Cancer stage IV disease, however, had significantly better survival with combined surgery and radiotherapy when stratified by stage. Supraglottic laryngectomy was discovered to have a considerably better 5-year DSS compared to complete laryngectomy and laryngectomy not otherwise indicated in patients receiving surgery.
