Supplemental peri-operative intravenous crystalloids for postoperative nausea and vomiting: An abridged Cochrane systematic review
Anaesthesia Sep 27, 2019
Jewer JK, et al. - Whether supplemental intravenous crystalloid administration affords an effective option to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting was investigated via a Cochrane systematic review. Researchers analyzed overall 41 randomized controlled trials that included patients undergoing surgery under general anaesthesia and were administered supplemental peri-operative intravenous crystalloid. They observed that the overall risk of postoperative nausea may decrease with the implementation of the intervention, the risk ratio (95%CI) being 0.62 (0.51–0.75). An attenuated overall risk of postoperative vomiting may be seen in relation to the administration of supplemental intravenous crystalloid, with a risk ratio (95%CI) of 0.50 (0.40–0.63). Findings revealed supplemental intravenous crystalloid administration had a beneficial influence on vomiting both within 6 h and by around 24 h postoperatively.
