Supplemental breast imaging utilization after breast density legislation in North Carolina
Journal of the American College of Radiology Jul 09, 2019
Nyante SJ, et al. - Through breast screening data from Carolina Mammography Registry, 78,967 women aged 40 to 79 years with no personal histories of breast cancer or breast implants were assessed by the researchers in order to examine supplemental screening pre- and post- density notification in North Carolina, where notification had been expected since 2014. In total 78,967 women underwent 145,279 index screening mammographic examinations, during the study. Despite the breast density, the similarity in supplemental screening use was ascertained pre- and post- the notification law. However, no variation in supplemental screening was observed, new use of any screening digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) from 2014 to 2016 was more prominent for women with dense breasts. Hence, no alterations in supplemental screening use in North Carolina were seen after the enactment of a breast density notification law, however, the elevation in a new use of any screening DBT was noted as greater for women with dense breasts. Furthermore, as new notification laws are formed, the short-term lack of change in supplemental screening should be viewed.
