Supplemental breast imaging utilization after breast density legislation in North Carolina
Journal of the American College of Radiology Aug 22, 2019
Nyante SJ, et al. - Breast screening data from Carolina Mammography Registry participants aged 40 to 79 years with no personal histories of breast cancer or breast implants were assessed by the researchers in order to examine supplemental screening prior to and following density notification in North Carolina, where notification had been needed since 2014. A total of 78,967 women underwent 145,279 index screening mammographic examinations during the study period. Supplemental screening use was comparable former to and following the notification law, despite breast density. However, no variation in supplemental screening was noted, new use of any screening digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) from 2014 to 2016 was higher for women with dense breasts. Thus, following enactment of a breast density notification law, supplemental screening use in North Carolina did not vary, however, the rise in new use of any screening DBT was higher for women with dense breasts. The short-term lack of change in supplemental screening should be acknowledged as new notification laws are made.
