Supermarket policies on less-healthy food at checkouts: Natural experimental evaluation using interrupted time series analyses of purchases
PLoS Medicine Jan 09, 2019
Ejlerskov KT, et al. - Authors assessed data on purchases made 2013-2017 from 9 different UK supermarkets to evaluate the impact of different policies on purchases of less-healthy foods usually advertised at checkouts. They analyzed data from several UK families who listed all of the food they bought and brought home. They noted that, when the supermarkets announced a checkout food policy, small packages of sugary confectionery, chocolate, and potato chips were purchased and taken home immediately, indicating that such policies could help people to eat better. However, approximately 7,500 people were also recorded with all the food they bought and ate without bringing home. Hence, it was not concluded that the recorded changes in purchases were due to checkout food policies.
