Suicide ideation severity is associated with severe suicide attempts in a military setting
European Psychiatry Jul 14, 2019
Shelef L, et al. - In order to investigate the efficacy of suicidal behavior prevention measures in the military, researchers determined the association of three tools commonly used with severe suicide attempts in this setting. They separated 39 Israeli soldiers (59% males; mean age 19 yrs.) who attempted suicide during military service into severe (n = 14; 35.9%) and moderate suicide attempts and evaluated them utilizing the Scale for Suicide Ideation, Suicide Intent Scale and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Outcomes revealed more severe suicide attempts in correlation to greater severity of suicidal ideation. Even when reported intent to die is low, male gender, available firearms, and current severe suicide ideation in combination is high-risk danger sig in a military setting.
