Suicide death rates in patients with cardiovascular diseases – A 15-year nationwide cohort study in Taiwan
Journal of Affective Disorders Jun 06, 2018
Wu VCC, et al. - In view of the limited literature on suicide mortality rates in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), researchers analyzed Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Death Registry for patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), ischemic stroke (IS), hemorrhagic stroke (HS), and pacemaker implantation (PMI) between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2015 and assessed suicidal death as primary outcome. Suicide death rates among patients with acute CVD with AMI, IS, and HS peaked early after diagnosis, but patients with chronic CVD with CHF and PMI demonstrated progressively increasing suicide death rates. Furthermore, patients with PMI, CHF, and IS showed highest association with psychiatric illness. Young to middle age patients with PMI showed the highest suicide death rate.
