Suicide attempts in association with traditional and electronic bullying among heterosexual and sexual minority US high school students
Journal of Adolescent Health Feb 05, 2021
Humphries KD, Li L, Smith GA, et al. - In heterosexual and lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) US high school students, researchers evaluated the correlation between bullying (traditional, electronic, and both) and suicide attempt using data from the 2015–2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Approximately 25% of students said they experienced bullying. A suicide attempt was reported by around 5.9% of heterosexual and 25.7% of LGB students. Overall, there were higher rates of both suicide attempts and experiencing bullying among LGB students. No synergistic effect of traditional and electronic bullying was observed in the risk of attempting suicide, although each form raises that risk. Though not statistically significant, students who experienced both forms of bullying had the highest prevalence of suicide attempt, but the interaction was not statistically significant
