Suicidality in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder: A systematic literature review
Archives of Women's Mental Health Mar 30, 2021
Osborn E, Brooks J, O’Brien PMS, et al. - Researchers undertook this study among women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in order to assess their risk profile for suicidality as well as to report the implications of these findings for clinical practice. Peer-reviewed articles published between 1989 and 2019 were selected from five databases, via a systematic literature review. A strong link of suicidal thoughts, ideation, plans and attempts with experiences of PMDD was found in this analysis, and these observations were independent of psychiatric co-morbidities. However, relative to suicide attempters without PMDD, females with PMDD neither exhibited more severe risk profiles for suicide attempts (in terms of frequency, impulsivity and lethality) nor did they make more frequent attempts during the luteal menstrual phase. Based on these data, considering females with PMDD as a high risk group for suicidality is advised, and therefore, detecting and treating symptoms are crucial in decreasing suicide attempts.
