Suicidality disparities between transgender and cisgender adolescents
Pediatrics Nov 10, 2019
Thoma BC, et al. - Researchers focused on the differences in suicidality across the full spectrum of suicidality between transgender adolescents (TGAs) and cisgender adolescents. They also assessed suicidality risk within TGA subgroups. They performed a cross-sectional online survey that was completed by adolescents aged 14 to 18 (N = 2,020, including 1,148 TGAs). Gender allotted at birth and current gender identity were revealed by participants. Evaluation of lifetime suicidality (passive death wish, suicidal ideation, suicide plan, suicide attempt, and attempt needing medical care) and nonsuicidal self-injury was done. In this large nationwide survey of adolescents in the United States, higher odds of all suicidality outcomes were observed among TGAs, and high risk for suicidal ideation and attempt was evident in transgender males and transgender females.
