Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and overweight and obesity in adolescents in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: A population-based analysis
Pediatrics International Jun 17, 2021
Nguyen NM, Tang HK, Dibley MJ, et al. - Using multivariate logistic regression models, researchers described the patterns of consumption of multiple sugary sweetened beverages (including modern and traditional) among adolescents in Ho Chi Minh City and identified a possible association between this consumption and overweight and obesity and with other main factors. The sample consisted of 11 to 15-year-old students from 31 junior high schools across Ho Chi Minh City. A higher level of physical activity, higher consumption of fast foods, and daily fruit and vegetable consumption were all positively associated with sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) consumption. A negative association was found between milk-based SSBs with overweight & obesity status of the students, with every kcal more of fresh milk with sugar and condensed milk can lessen an odd of 0.005 and 0.004 consecutively. None of the other SSBs were found to be significantly associated with adolescent overweight and obesity. Milk-based drinks may protect adolescents from being overweight or obese, but more research is needed to confirm this.
