Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy in patients treated with brain-responsive neurostimulation
Epilepsia Jan 21, 2018
Devinsky O, et al. - The incidence and clinical features of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) were examined among patients treated with direct brain-responsive stimulation with the RNS System. Among patients treated with the RNS System, the SUDEP rate of 2.0/1000 patient stimulation years was favorable relative to treatment-resistant epilepsy patients randomized to the placebo arm of add-on drug studies or with seizures after resective surgery. Treatments that reduced seizures appeared to reduce SUDEP risk. Findings revealed that not all SUDEPs followed seizures.
