Sudden cardiac arrest survival in HEARTSafe Communities
Resuscitation Nov 16, 2019
Cone DC, et al. - Given that in the HEARTSafe Communities program, community efforts to improve systems for treating sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) are promoted, researchers investigated the rates of SCA survival to admission, discharge, and discharge with CPC score 1 or 2 in HEARTSafe-designated communities vs non-designated communities in Connecticut, USA. In addition, they examined bystander CPR and AED application. A list of towns that are HEARTSafe-designated, and dates of designation were obtained from the state Office of EMS. Data for all SCA from 2013 to 2017 in the 70 participating towns were obtained using the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival. They identified reporting of 2,922 SCA cases; of these, 1,569 (54%) occurred in towns that were HEARTSafe-designated. The analysis revealed no differences in SCA survival rates between HEARTSafe and non-HEARTSafe communities in Connecticut. In HEARTSafe communities, SCA patients did no receive bystander AED application or bystander CPR more frequently.
