Successful strategy to decrease indwelling catheter utilization rates in an academic medical intensive care unit
American Journal of Infection Control Aug 26, 2017
Gupta SS, et al. – In this paper, researchers shared their experience devising a strategy to decrease the utilization of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs). In addition, they underscored the challenges of managing critically ill patients without IUCs and demonstrated some of the initiatives that they undertook to overcome these challenges. The interventions established that aggressive and comprehensive IUC restriction protocol and provider training could lead to a successful decrease in IUC use, leading to a lower IUC utilization ratio and catheter–associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) rate in a large complex academic intensive care unit (ICU) setting.
