Success of prostate and testicular cancer awareness campaigns compared with breast cancer awareness month according to internet search volumes: A google trends analysis
Urology Feb 02, 2020
Patel MS, et al. - A google trends analysis was designed to compare the efficacy of men's and women's cancer awareness campaigns using internet relative search volume (RSV) as a surrogate for the public interest. The Google Trends were applied to determine the RSV for “breast cancer,” “prostate cancer,” and “testicular cancer” between 2010 and 2017. For each cancer, baseline annual RSV was estimated as the median annual RSV, exclusive of the awareness month period. In cancer-specific RSV, breast Cancer Awareness Month led to a significant improvement in October each year during the study period (mean increase 180.1%). Whereas Breast Cancer Awareness Month consistently improved, cancer-specific RSV was not increased by RSV Men's cancer awareness campaigns. While additional metrics are required to assess the efficacy of public health campaigns, the recent findings demonstrate the requirement for new approaches to produce public interest in male-specific malignancies.
