Subtypes of delirium after ischemic stroke - predisposing factors and outcomes: a prospective observational study (PROPOLIS)

European Journal of Neurology Oct 21, 2021

Czyzycki M, Klimiec-Moskal E, Chrobak AA, et al. - As delirium is a serious complication after a stroke, researchers herein examined if there are differences in delirium subtypes in terms of predisposing factors, clinical characteristics and outcomes.

  • Among 698 patients with ischemic stroke or TIA, 28, 75 and 66 patients were diagnosed with hyperactive, hypoactive and mixed delirium, respectively.

  • Observations revealed development of hyperactive delirium in correlation with less severe stroke and higher scores of preexisting irritability/liability.

  • Outcomes were poor in correlation with all three motor subtypes of delirium, although less unfavorable prognosis was recorded in correlation with development of hyperactive delirium.
