Subthalamic nucleus stimulation, dopaminergic treatment and impulsivity in Parkinson's disease
Neuropsychologia Mar 07, 2018
Fluchère F, et al. - An exploration was carried out of the electromyographic activity (EMG) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients in order to examine if deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN DBS) influenced the expression and/or suppression of subthreshold muscle impulses that were critical for action control along with the interaction between dopaminergic treatment and STN DBS. It was reported that STN DBS impaired the action control by weakening erroneous impulse suppression, irrespective of patients being On or Off their usual medication. Hence, findings illustrated that medication specifically lowered the mechanical threshold while STN DBS lowered the mechanical threshold and to a lesser extent the EMG-threshold.
