Doulaptsi M, et al. - Researchers gauged the diagnosis and treatment options of thyroid goiters extending into the mediastinum and the thoracic cavity. For thyroid surgery, a major indication was constituted by descending goiter. They noted a probability of surgical management of the overwhelming majority of descending goiters through a neck incision. Findings suggested that good results with low morbidity should be expected in experienced hands. Such cases should be considered as challenging. In order to ensure optimal results, management in a referral center may be essential.
