Subregional statistical shape modelling identifies lesser trochanter size as a possible risk factor for radiographic hip osteoarthritis: A cross-sectional analysis from the osteoporotic fractures in men study

Faber BG, Bredbenner TL, Baird D, et al. - This research was attempted to evaluate shape characteristics related to radiographic hip osteoarthritis (rHOA) by focusing on subregions distinguished from whole-hip shape models. Researchers used statistical shape modelling (SSM) to hip dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) obtained in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study. Subregional HSMs were further defined by evaluating correlations with 3D-HSMs derived from concurrent hip CT scans. They distinguished 4,098 participants with hip DXAs and radiographs. The evidence showed that subregional SSM of hip DXA scans implied larger lesser trochanter and cam morphology underlie correlations between overall hip shape and rHOA. The data indicated that 3D hip modelling implies the subregional SSMs represent true anatomical changes in hip shape, warranting further investigation.
