Subnational mapping of under-5 and neonatal mortality trends in India: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2000–17

The Lancet May 31, 2020

Dandona R, Kumar GA, Henry NJ, et al. - Researchers provided a thorough review of subnational trends in child mortality to inform efforts to reach the targets for child mortality in India's National Health Policy and Sustainable Development Goal. Using all accessible data from various sources including surveys with subnational geographical information, they evaluated the under-5 mortality rate and neonatal mortality rate from 2000 to 2017 in 5 × 5 km grids across India, and for the districts and states of India. India has made gains in child survival, but there are substantial variations in the magnitude and rate of mortality decline between the states, and even greater variations between the Indian districts. For the majority of states, inequality between districts within states has increased. The district-level patterns presented here will provide valuable guidance for India's targeted efforts to reduce child mortality to reach the Indian and global survival targets for children. District-level mortality patterns along with state-level patterns in causes of under-5 and neonatal death and the risk factors set out in this Article provide a detailed guide for further planning on reducing child mortality in India.
