Submental flap practice patterns and perceived outcomes: A survey of 212 AHNS surgeons
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 08, 2019
Tang L, Day AT, Lee R, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers characterized American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) surgeon submental flap (SMF) practice patterns and assessed variables correlated with SMF complications. An online survey was distributed to 782 AHNS surgeons between November 11, 2016, and December 31, 2016. One hundred eight reported performing SMFs among 212 AHNS surgeons, of whom 86 received complete responses. Practice patterns of SMFs performing surgeons are diverse, although most use the flap for reconstruction of the oral cavity. Although "very few" complications were recorded by 43% of surgeons performing the SMF, overall complication rates with the SMF were higher than other flaps, likely due to limited experience with the SMF. There is a sign of increased training opportunities in the harvest and inset of SMF.
