Subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis: Results from the 3-year, multicentre, prospective, observational GIRRCS (Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale) study
Arthritis Research & Therapy Sep 11, 2019
Ruscitti P, Cipriani P, Liakouli V, et al. - Consecutive individuals (n = 841) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), admitted to Italian Rheumatology Units, were assessed in the Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca in Reumatologia Clinica e Sperimentale cohort from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2015, to evaluate both the occurrence and predictive factors of subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis in RA. The heightened prevalence and incidence of both subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis in 3-year prospectively followed individuals, principally in the subset with a term of disease < 5 years, were reported. The achievement and the maintenance of remission were correlated with a decrease in the risk of subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis. Among “traditional” cardiovascular risk factors, individuals with type 2 diabetes exhibited a greater risk of clinical and subclinical atherosclerosis.
