Study of perinatal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a Mexican public hospital
International Journal of Infectious Diseases Oct 12, 2021
Ramírez-Rosas A, Benitez-Guerrero T, Corona-Cervantes K, et al. - SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected during delivery in asymptomatic women, with its perinatal transmission to newborns. As samples from neonates were obtained immediately after birth, infection by the virus in-utero might have resulted in the positivity of the cases.
The presence of SARS-CoV-2 was determined in 133 nasopharyngeal swab samples obtained from mothers, 131 swab samples obtained from neonates, and 140 colostrum samples.
SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected during delivery in Mexican asymptomatic women. Perinatal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus to newborns was evident.
SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in a low percentage in colostrum/milk.
There appeared greater sensitivity of droplet digital PCR to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA.
