Study of MRI brain findings and carotid US features in systemic sclerosis patients, relationship with disease parameters

Arthritis Research & Therapy Apr 20, 2019

Gamal RM, et al. - Researchers examined 72 Systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients with no central nervous system symptoms for the carotid artery intima-media thickness and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain findings and compared the findings with those of 42 healthy controls. Further, they sought a relationship between these parameters and clinical measures in SSc. Findings revealed correlation between MRI lesion numbers and common carotid artery intima-media thickness in systemic sclerosis patients without central nervous system symptoms. Patients with elevated C-reactive protein or increased Medsger SSc Severity Scale, or increased thickened carotid IMT were more frequently found to have MRI abnormalities.
