Structural brain abnormalities in adolescents and young adults with congenital heart defect: A systematic review
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Aug 04, 2018
Bolduc ME, et al. - In adolescents and young adults with a complex congenital heart defect (CHD), researchers intended to characterize and quantify brain structural abnormalities, as well as assess the degree to which these structural abnormalities were correlated with functional outcomes. For this investigation, they searched for studies in Embase, MEDLINE, and Web of Science that studied brain structure via magnetic resonance imaging in adolescents and young adults with complex CHD. The evidence strongly suggests that adolescents and young adults with CHD were at increased risk of presenting with structural brain abnormalities. In young people with CHD, brain volumes, cortical measurements, and white matter microstructure were altered. The most common types of abnormality were focal and multifocal lesions.
