Strong association between metabolically-abnormal obesity and gallstone disease in adults under 50 years
BMC Gastroenterology Jul 15, 2019
Su PY, et al. - In this retrospective, cross-sectional study with 3,190 participants, researchers examined the influence of risk factors including age, metabolic syndrome, and obesity on gallstone formation. An increased correlation of gallstones in young individuals (< 50 years old) with metabolic syndrome and obesity was demonstrated in this research. However, the hepatitis C virus was the main associated factor for gallstone formation in people over 50 years of age. In younger people with metabolic abnormality and obesity, the prevalence of gallstones was equal to that of metabolically healthy and non-obese elderly people. In order to avoid gallstone formation, diet and exercise intervention may be useful to high-risk groups, however, further studies are needed to verify these findings.
