Stroke incidence is highest in women and non-Hispanic blacks living with HIV in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group Longitudinal Linked Randomized Trials cohort
AIDS May 17, 2018
Chow FC, et al. - In a cohort of persons living with HIV infection (PLWH), the incidence of first-ever stroke/transient ischemic attack (TIA) was investigated. Researchers also searched for the associated risk factors among them. They observed the AIDS Clinical Trials Group ALLRT cohort and its parent trials and recognized the highest incidence rates of stroke/TIA among women and non-Hispanic Blacks living with HIV. In women, the higher risk of stroke/TIA was more pronounced at younger ages, whereas a greater increase in stroke/TIA risk was noted with older age in men than women. Hypertension, higher LDL, and HIV RNA greater than 200 copies/ml were the other risk factors for stroke/TIA. Overweight/obese BMI and higher CD4+:CD8+ ratio were noted to be protective against stroke/TIA.
