Stroke in pregnancy and puerperium: Validated incidence trends with risk factor analysis in Finland 1987-2016
Neurology® May 28, 2021
Karjalainen L, Tikkanen M, Rantanen K, et al. - Researchers aimed at examining whether chart-validated register data in Finland show previously reported rising incidence of pregnancy-associated stroke (PAS). In this exploratory analysis, risk factors for PAS were studied. They conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study and nested case-control study. After chart review, they identified PAS occurrence in 29.6% (257 of 868) cases. Observations revealed increasing incidence of PAS incidence, highlighting the importance of careful pregnancy surveillance and risk factor management, particularly in older expectant mothers and extending to puerperium. The multivariable-adjusted model revealed the following as the most important risk factors for PAS: smoking beyond 12 gestational weeks, migraine, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
