Stroke case-fatality and marital status
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Jun 23, 2018
Andersen KK, et al. - Most studies state that marriage conveys a survival advantage, so researchers investigated whether this is also valid for stroke patients. They analyzed 1-week and 1-month stroke case-fatality in relation to marital status (married, unmarried, divorced, and widowed) in all subjects admitted to hospital for incident stroke in Denmark between 2003-2012,. Participants in the study were 60,507 subjects with an incident stroke of whom 51.19% were married, 9.47% were unmarried, 13.29% were divorced, and 26.05% were widowers. Compared to the married stroke patients, one-week and one-month case-fatality by a stroke were lower among the unmarried, divorced, and widowed. Among divorced, widowed, and singles, selection by so-called mortality displacement was associated with shorter life expectancy.
