Stimulant drugs are associated with violent and penetrating trauma
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Mar 28, 2019
Armenian P, et al. - Via this prospective observational study of trauma patients > 13 years who had blood drawn for routine tests at a level 1 trauma center, researchers examined how injury mechanism is associated with drugs of abuse detected in serum via confirmatory testing. They analyzed 272 patients (71.0% were male), the violent injury type was noted in 30.5% and a penetrating injury mechanism in 32.4%. Patients who were male, younger age, Black, or Hispanic exhibited more frequently violent injury type and penetrating injury mechanisms. As per liquid chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF/MS), 46.0% were positive for at least one drug. It was noted that many drugs that were present in trauma patients are not routinely detected on urine drug of abuse tests. In correlation to both stimulant drugs and cigarette smoking, multidimensional hazardous behaviors were indicated and were associated with more violent and penetrating trauma.
