Steroid allergy: Clinical features and the importance of excipient testing in a diagnostic algorithm
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Feb 09, 2018
Li PH, et al. - Clinical characteristics and frequency of excipient allergy in patients with confirmed type I hypersensitivity to systemic corticosteroid (CS) preparations were assessed herein. True allergy was found to be significantly more likely to be developed in patients with respiratory manifestations. As per observations, CS allergies are rare and may be over-diagnosed without excipient testing. Herein, researchers recommended the use of Carmellose eye drops as a readily available source of carboxymethylcellulose for testing and proposed a comprehensive diagnostic algorithm for suspected CS allergy.
