Statins may reduce disease recurrence in patients with ulcerated primary melanoma
British Journal of Dermatology Mar 09, 2020
von Schuckmann LA, Khosrotehrani K, Ghiasvand R, et al. - Using Cox-regression analyses, researchers ascertained if long-term statin use commenced before the diagnosis of the primary was correlated with decreased risk of melanoma recurrence. Between 2010 and 2014, they prospectively followed a cohort of patients newly diagnosed with localised tumour-stage T1b to T4b melanoma in Queensland, Australia. Of the 700 patients diagnosed with stage T1b to T4b primary melanoma (mean age 62), 94 patients experienced melanoma recurrence within 2 years. Findings suggested that statins initiated before the diagnosis of melanoma can lessen the risk of recurrence of melanoma, particularly in males and those with ulcerated tumors. Evaluation of the potential role of statins in enhancing the prognosis of high-risk melanoma is warranted for clinical trials.
