Statins after myocardial infarction in the oldest: A cohort study in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink database
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 29, 2019
Lefeber GJ, et al. – Researchers performed a retrospective cohort analysis in the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (1999-2016) to assess the impact of initiating statins for secondary prevention following a first myocardial infarction (MI) in patients aged ≥ 80 years. Among participants, a composite of recurrent MI, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality (primary outcome), as well as all-cause mortality (secondary outcome), was evaluated. The investigators observed a lower risk of the composite outcome and of all-cause mortality in relation to 2 years of statin prescriptions in 3,900 patients aged ≥ 80 years. Overall, starting statin following a first MI was supported in this age group of patients if continued for ≥ 2 years. Giving special consideration to statin therapy in patients with a low risk of 2-year mortality was recommended.
