Statin use linked with a decrease in the conversion from high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) to prostate cancer

Carcinogenesis Apr 10, 2018

Fowke JH, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the metabolic and inflammatory factors in the transition from high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) to prostate cancer (PC) in this prospective study of HGPIN patients at high-risk for PC. Statin use was shown to be significantly related to attenuated risk of PC detection at follow-up. No mediating effect of systemic markers of inflammation on this association was seen. Non-statin cholesterol lowering medications, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, diabetes, hypertension, and percent body fat were not significantly associated with PC. Overall, it was suggested that statins affect prostate cancer progression via alternative pathways.
