Statin use associated with lower risk of epilepsy after intracranial haemorrhage: A population-based cohort study
British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology Jun 30, 2018
Lin HW, et al. - Researchers evaluated the relationships between statin use before and after intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and the risk of post-stroke epilepsy (PSE). Patients with new-onset ICH between 2004 and 2012 were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The risk of PSE after ICH could be reduced with statin therapy, particularly in patients receiving moderate-to-high intensity therapy, in whom the risk of PSE was lower. A reduced risk of PSE was linked to poststroke, but not prestroke, stain use. The associations of lipophilic and hydrophilic statins with the reduced risk of PSE were similar.
