Statin use and site-specific risk of colorectal cancer in individuals with hypercholesterolemia from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS)

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases May 31, 2019

Lee JW, et al. - Using the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort as the basis of this investigation, researchers assessed the link between statin use and site-specific risk of colorectal cancer in subjects with hypercholesterolemia. Based on medication possession ratio, the divisions of statin users included high and low users. Subjects who did not use statins throughout the follow-up period were considered as statin nonusers. Participants, including 17,737 statin users and 13,412 statin nonusers, were observed over a median duration of 12.7 years. Lower risk of overall colorectal cancer, particularly proximal colon cancer in males and rectal cancer in both genders, was observed in relation to high statin users with hypercholesterolemia.
