Statin use and reduced risk of biliary tract cancers in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink
Gut Jul 15, 2019
Liu Z, et al. - In this nested case–control investigation carried out in the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink, researchers evaluated the link between statin use and risk of biliary tract cancers (BTC). Patients who received a diagnosis of incident primary BTCs, including cancers of the gall bladder, bile duct (ie, both intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma), ampulla of Vater and mixed type, between 1990 and 2017, were included in this analysis. Overall, a total of 3,118 BTC cases and 15,519 cancer-free controls were included. According to the findings, a 12% lower risk of BTCs was reported in relation to current statin use vs non-use of statins; however, no link was identified with former statin use. Long-term users and individuals with diabetes exhibited the most pronounced attenuation in risks.
