Statin use and pneumonia risk in Parkinson disease
Parkinsonism & Related Disorders Oct 02, 2021
Yun SJ, Byun SJ, Kim HJ, et al. - Parkinson disease (PD) patients exhibited a lower risk of pneumonia in relation to statin use. Statins might influence the occurrence of pneumonia by decreasing cholesterol or slowing the progression of PD as neuroprotective agents.
Using the 2002-2017 National Health Insurance Service database, PD patients who had received statins and developed pneumonia during observation were included.
The self-controlled case series analysis involved 337 of 10,159 patients with PD.
The statin-exposed period showed reduced incidence of pneumonia vs unexposed period (incidence rate ratio, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.86-0.91).
Statin use was associated with a significantly decreased risk of developing pneumonia (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.62-0.78).
