Statin treatment and prognosis of elderly patients discharged after non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome
Cardiology Aug 10, 2019
Vicent L, Ariza-Solé A, Díez-Villanueva P, et al. - Researchers report the proportion of very elderly patients taking statins following non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NST-ACS) in this prospective registry performed in 44 hospitals. They also focused on the impact of statin use on prognosis in these individuals. Participants were patients ≥ 80 years discharged following a NST-ACS from April 2016 to September 2016. Overall, 523 patients with a mean age of 84.2 ± 4.0 years were included, and 200 patients (38.2%) were women. Statin use prior to the episode was reported in most octogenarians presenting a NST-ACS but these individuals frequently had LDL cholesterol > 2.6 mmol/L. A high-risk profile, with significant frailty and comorbidity, was detected in octogenarians who did not receive statins.
