Statin therapy and risk of incident diabetes mellitus in adults with cardiovascular risk factors
The American Journal of Cardiology Dec 19, 2019
Go AS, Ambrosy AP, Kheder K, et al. - Researchers examined the link between statins and diabetes mellitus (DM) among adults without DM who had cardiovascular risk factors and no previous lipid lowering therapy (LLT), identified between 2008 and 2010 by the Kaiser Permanente CHAMP Study. The presence of ≥ 2 abnormal tests (ie, A1C ≥ 6.5% or a fasting blood glucose ≥ 126 mg/dl) or ≥ 1 abnormal test result plus a new diagnostic code or medication for DM, defined incident DM. There were 213,289 eligible adults, of those, 28,149 starting statins were carefully matched to an equal number of patients who remained off LLT during follow-up. They noted a low crude rate (per 100 person-years) of incident DM but in patients who were managed with a statin vs no LLT, this rate was marginally higher. Findings revealed an independent link of initiation of statin therapy with a modestly higher risk of incident DM among adults without DM at increased atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk.
